What Puts the “K” in K-Beauty?

Day 1

Korean skincare products and natural beauty ingredients

K-beauty has grown from a regional trend into a global industry. Korean skincare products are now sold in major stores and online marketplaces around the world. Their popularity has also encouraged companies outside South Korea to adopt Korean ingredients, routines, designs, and marketing styles. As a result, the meaning of the “K” in K-beauty has become increasingly blurred.

At first, the definition may appear simple. A K-beauty product should be made by a Korean company in South Korea. However, modern supply chains rarely fit such a clear model. Some Korean-owned brands manufacture products overseas, while foreign companies produce skincare in Korean factories. Other businesses are based in Europe or the United States but develop products inspired by Korean beauty traditions.

For some companies, the key factor is not ownership or manufacturing location but the ingredients. K-beauty is often associated with ingredients such as green tea, rice, ginseng, centella asiatica, and snail mucin. These ingredients have become part of the industry’s global identity, even when the final product is developed outside Korea.

Others argue that K-beauty should be defined by its skincare philosophy. Korean beauty routines often emphasize prevention, hydration, gentle care, and several carefully ordered steps. Rather than offering a single product to solve one problem, this approach treats skincare as a holistic process. A foreign brand that follows this philosophy may therefore describe itself as K-beauty-inspired.

However, critics say that inspiration alone is not enough. They argue that an authentic K-beauty product should involve Korean expertise, research, manufacturing methods, or cultural knowledge. According to this view, simply using Korean-looking packaging or placing the word “Seoul” on a label does not create a genuine connection to Korea.

Regulation provides another possible standard. Products officially sold in South Korea must follow the country’s safety and labeling rules. Some industry representatives believe that acceptance in the Korean market is an important test. Korean consumers are highly familiar with beauty products and may judge whether a brand truly reflects local expectations.

Yet consumer recognition can also create a difficult question. Suppose a product is designed by Korean experts and becomes popular in Korea but is manufactured in another country. Is it still K-beauty? Similarly, if an American company uses Korean ingredients and follows Korean skincare principles, should nationality alone prevent it from using the term?

K-beauty’s identity may continue to evolve as the industry becomes more international. It may no longer describe only where a product comes from. It can also refer to a combination of innovation, cultural influence, consumer trust, and skincare philosophy. The debate reflects a broader question in the global economy: when an idea crosses borders, who has the right to define it?
