Speaking Across Languages

Day 2: Why Learn a Language if AI Can Translate?

言語を越えて話す ― 第2日:AIが翻訳できるなら、なぜ言語を学ぶのか

“Why should I learn English if AI can translate for me?” A child might ask this, but adults may wonder the same thing. Translation is useful. If you need directions or have a problem at a hotel, a real-time translation app can help you get an answer. For that purpose, there may be no reason to struggle through the conversation yourself.

「AIが翻訳してくれるなら、なぜ英語を学ばなければならないの?」子どもがこう聞くかもしれませんが、大人も同じことを考えることがあります。翻訳は役に立ちます。道を尋ねたいときや、ホテルで問題があるとき、リアルタイム翻訳アプリは答えを得る助けになります。その目的のためなら、自分で会話に苦労する理由はないかもしれません。

Now imagine spending an evening abroad with people from Japan, Germany, Mexico, and other countries. Everyone speaks some English. You have dinner together, someone suggests another bar, and then the group decides to go dancing. Plans change, jokes interrupt the conversation, and people talk in several small groups at once. You can use a translation app when you need it. But when no one else is using one, pulling out your phone for every invitation or joke can feel awkward. It becomes harder to relax and join in.

Later, two people from the group stay behind and talk about why one of them changed careers. The explanation is difficult even in a language they know well. In English, they have to rephrase an idea, ask “Is that what you mean?”, and try again. Neither speaks perfectly, but both are making an effort to reach the other. That mutual effort can become part of the connection between them.

その後、グループのうち二人が残り、なぜそのうちの一人が転職したのかを話します。その説明は、よく知っている言語でさえ難しいものです。英語では、アイデアを言い換え、「そういう意味ですか?」と聞き、もう一度試さなければなりません。どちらも完璧には話しませんが、二人とも相手に届こうと努力しています。その相互の努力が、二人のつながりの一部になりうるのです。

Learning English can take someone beyond conversations in English, too. Consider a person from Japan who goes to Israel to study Hebrew, or to Egypt to study Arabic. In a class with learners from different countries, English may help them ask questions and follow explanations. English-language dictionaries and other reference materials may also give them more choices than Japanese ones. Knowing English gives them access to another language—and to the people and ideas they encounter through it.

With growing language skills, people can follow interviews, books, and jokes firsthand. They may encounter ideas that challenge their assumptions about family, work, or politics. AI can help them navigate an unfamiliar word or a difficult passage. Learning makes it easier to notice something unexpected and stay with it long enough to understand why it matters.

言語の技能が伸びるにつれ、人々はインタビューや本、冗談を直接たどれるようになります。家族や仕事、政治についての自分の前提を揺さぶるアイデアに出会うこともあるでしょう。AIは、なじみのない単語や難しい一節を読み進める助けになりえます。学ぶことは、予想外の何かに気づき、それがなぜ重要なのかを理解できるまでそこに留まることを、より容易にします。

A translation app can help you join a conversation before you speak the language. You should use it when it helps. But the wish to keep up with a group, to speak in your own words, or to follow an unexpected interest can turn into curiosity about the language itself and the cultures you encounter through it. What begins as wanting to take part in one evening may lead to people, books, and even other languages you had never expected to encounter.

翻訳アプリは、その言語を話せるようになる前に会話に加わる助けになります。役立つときには使うべきです。しかし、グループについていきたい、自分の言葉で話したい、予想外の関心を追いかけたいという願いは、その言語そのものへの、そしてそれを通して出会う文化への好奇心へと変わりえます。一つの夜に参加したいという思いから始まったものが、出会うとは思ってもいなかった人々や本、さらにはほかの言語へとつながることもあるのです。
