Why Are Oil Companies Making Such Huge Profits?

Day 1

Large oil companies have reaped enormous profits during the latest period of disruption in global energy markets. Saudi Aramco reported adjusted net income of $33.4 billion for the second quarter of 2026, while BP reported $5.7 billion in underlying replacement-cost profit. The two figures use different accounting methods, but both show that the quarter was highly profitable.

It is tempting to explain these results by looking only at the price of crude oil. However, crude oil cannot normally be poured directly into a car or an aircraft. It must first be processed in a refinery, where it is turned into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and other products. This means that the price paid by consumers depends on more than the cost of the original oil.

A serious bottleneck can appear when the world has enough crude oil but not enough working refineries. Damage, maintenance, closures, trade restrictions, or transport problems can reduce the amount of fuel that refineries produce. When supplies of a refined product, such as diesel or jet fuel, become limited, its price may rise even if crude oil prices are stable or falling.

This is where the refining margin becomes important. It is roughly the difference between the cost of crude oil and the value of the fuels produced from it. Analysts often use a measurement called a crack spread to estimate this difference. When gasoline or diesel prices rise faster than crude oil prices, the crack spread becomes wider, and refining can become much more profitable.

That is largely what happened in the second quarter of 2026. Disruptions to oil and fuel flows through the Strait of Hormuz created tight supplies in international markets. In the United States, the average gasoline crack spread was 60 percent higher than a year earlier, while spreads for diesel and jet fuel more than doubled. Refineries operated at unusually high levels, even though total US refining capacity was lower than it had been in 2019.

Companies that control several parts of the energy business can benefit in different ways. They may produce crude oil, transport it, refine it, and sell the final fuel. A company with large refineries may earn more from processing oil when refining margins are strong. A producer may also benefit when geopolitical fears push crude oil prices higher. Owning valuable infrastructure gives such companies advantages that smaller competitors may not have.

For consumers, however, the situation can be frustrating. Falling crude oil prices do not always produce an immediate or equal fall in gasoline prices. Refinery availability, inventories, transport costs, taxes, seasonal demand, and retail margins also influence the final price. The US Energy Information Administration estimates that crude oil has normally accounted for slightly more than half of the average US retail gasoline price, but expected its share to fall below 45 percent in 2026 and 2027.

Oil markets can also be extremely volatile. A military attack, ceasefire announcement, refinery shutdown, or shipping disruption can quickly change expectations. This explains how crude oil can become cheaper while gasoline remains expensive—and why an oil company can report huge profits even when the price of crude is no longer at its highest point. Understanding oil profits therefore requires looking at the entire journey from the oil field to the fuel pump.

  1. reap — to receive a large benefit or reward as a result of an action or situation. Example: Some energy companies reaped large profits when fuel supplies became limited.
  2. crude oil — natural oil taken from the ground before it has been processed. Example: The refinery purchases crude oil from several producing countries.
  3. refinery — an industrial facility where crude oil is processed into usable fuels and other products. Example: The refinery produces gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
  4. bottleneck — a point in a system where limited capacity slows down the entire process. Example: A shortage of storage tanks created a bottleneck in the supply chain.
