Finding Joy in the Middle of the Pacific

Solo ocean rowing boat on open Pacific waters at sunrise

Most people imagine beautiful waves when they think about rowing across the Pacific Ocean. Kelsey Pfendler remembers something else too: being hit in the face by flying fish. During the night, fish sometimes jumped into her boat, and she had to remove them while trying not to hurt them.

The 32-year-old American rowed alone from California to Hawaii, a journey of about 4,000 kilometers. She completed the trip in roughly 43 days. According to the Ocean Rowing Society International, she became the fastest person to complete the route alone, breaking both the women’s and men’s speed records.

The journey was physically grueling. Kelsey faced strong winds, difficult ocean currents, lack of sleep, and long periods of isolation. She had to row, eat, repair equipment, check the weather, and make important decisions without another person beside her.

However, Kelsey said she did not wake up wishing she were somewhere else. Ocean rowing combined many things she loved: endurance sports, water, adventure, and rowing itself. She explained that her speed was not simply the result of suffering. It was also an extension of her joy.

Although she was alone at sea, she was not completely disconnected from other people. Kelsey regularly posted videos and updates online. Her journey attracted millions of views, and people around the world began following her progress and sending messages of support.

Kelsey was surprised by the attention. She did not see herself as an unreachable elite athlete. Instead, she hoped her story would show that ordinary people are capable of doing difficult things when they care deeply about a goal and are willing to begin.

The ocean also taught her humility. She knew that she could not control the wind, waves, or currents. Instead of fighting nature at every moment, she had to adjust her plans and work with the conditions around her. Accepting that lack of control became part of the experience.

Her message was simple: large goals can feel overwhelming when we think about every task at once. It is often better to remember why the goal matters and focus on the next step. People may not feel ready to finish something difficult, but they may already be strong enough to start.
