When a new pope is elected, he chooses a new name. The decision is rarely accidental. A papal name can honor an earlier religious leader, signal continuity with a particular tradition, or suggest the priorities of the new pontificate. Soon after his election, Pope Leo XIV explained that one of the principal reasons for his choice was Pope Leo XIII, who led the Catholic Church during a period of profound economic and social change.

Leo XIII became pope in 1878, when industrialization was rapidly transforming Europe and North America. Factories expanded, cities grew, and large numbers of people left rural communities to seek paid work. Industrial production created enormous wealth, but its benefits were distributed unevenly. Many laborers worked long hours for low wages in unsafe conditions, while employers often resisted efforts to form unions.

The changes produced what was then called the “social question.” Economic growth was improving life for some people, but it was also creating exploitation, urban poverty, conflict between workers and owners, and anxiety about the future of society. Governments, political movements, and religious institutions struggled to determine how they should respond.

In 1891, Leo XIII issued an encyclical titled Rerum Novarum. The Latin title is often translated as “Of New Things” or “On the New Things.” The document addressed the condition of industrial workers and the growing conflict between capital and labor. It defended private property and rejected revolutionary socialism, but it also criticized employers who treated workers merely as tools for profit.

The encyclical argued that workers were entitled to humane conditions, sufficient wages, rest, and the freedom to organize. It also emphasized that economic relationships carried moral responsibilities. A labor contract might be legally accepted by both sides, but that did not automatically make it just. A worker in dire need might accept conditions that no genuinely free person would choose.

This position placed the Church between two powerful forces of the period. On one side was unrestricted capitalism, under which owners could claim that the market alone should determine wages and working conditions. On the other was socialism, which sought to replace private ownership with collective control. Leo XIII rejected both extremes and argued that employers, workers, governments, families, and religious communities all had responsibilities toward the common good. Rerum Novarum later became a foundation of modern Catholic social teaching.

More than a century later, Leo XIV sees a historical parallel. The Industrial Revolution reorganized production through factories and machines. The current digital revolution is reorganizing work and decision-making through algorithms, robotics, and artificial intelligence. In both periods, technological progress promises greater productivity while raising difficult questions about power, employment, inequality, and human dignity.

The comparison does not mean that factory machinery and AI are identical. Nineteenth-century industrialization initially threatened mainly manual laborers, whereas AI may also transform the work of teachers, programmers, lawyers, designers, office employees, and other knowledge workers. The technologies are different, but the underlying question remains familiar: Who gains from a revolution in productivity, and who is expected to bear its costs?

The Industrial Revolution forced society to ask new questions about work and justice. Pope Leo XIV believes the AI revolution is asking many of those same questions again.
