What Is Pope Leo XIV Worried About AI?

Artificial intelligence can write reports, create images, translate languages, and help people make decisions. Many people discuss whether AI will become more accurate or more powerful. Pope Leo XIV has focused on a different question: How will this technology affect human dignity, judgment, work, and relationships?

The Pope has not presented AI as something that should simply be rejected. In a June 2025 message to a conference on AI and business, he recognized its potential to benefit society. At the same time, he warned that ethical questions should not be treated as secondary concerns. He said that responsibility for deciding how AI is developed and used remains with human beings.

One concern is the difference between artificial intelligence and human intelligence. AI can process enormous amounts of information, but it does not understand life in the same way that a person does. It has no personal experience, moral responsibility, or genuine concern for another person. Pope Leo has therefore cautioned against evaluating human beings mainly by the qualities that machines can imitate, such as speed, efficiency, and the ability to produce useful results. In one address, he said that a person is not simply “a system of algorithms.”

This distinction becomes important when AI is used to make decisions about people. An algorithm may help a company select job applicants, a school evaluate students, or a government distribute public services. Such systems can appear neutral because they use data. However, the data may contain earlier inequalities, and the people affected may not understand how a decision was made. The Pope has emphasized the continuing need for human discernment—the ability to consider context, values, and consequences rather than simply follow an automated result.

AI may also change the way people communicate. Systems can now imitate human voices, faces, knowledge, and conversation. They may sound sympathetic or confident even though they do not possess feelings or wisdom. In his 2026 message for World Communications Day, Pope Leo warned about allowing artificial systems to replace human voices and relationships. He also drew attention to the fact that much of this technology is controlled by a small number of powerful companies.

This creates questions about both relationships and power. Who decides what information an AI system gives us? Who controls the data used to train it? Who benefits financially from its widespread adoption? Pope Leo has not offered a detailed policy for every industry. His public statements instead identify principles that he believes should guide governments, businesses, educators, and technology developers, including human dignity, justice, transparency, and responsibility.

His concern also extends to work. Like the machines of the Industrial Revolution, AI may increase productivity while changing or eliminating certain jobs. The social consequences will depend partly on decisions made by companies and governments: whether workers are protected, whether new opportunities are widely shared, and whether efficiency is valued more highly than the people whose lives are affected.

Pope Leo XIV has said that AI should serve human beings rather than diminish or replace them. His concerns leave society with a difficult question: Which decisions and relationships should remain fundamentally human?
