Inside a modern warehouse, hundreds of small robots move quickly across the floor. They carry shelves, deliver products to workers, and change direction without following fixed rails. These machines are not science-fiction robots. They are autonomous mobile robots, and Chinese companies are already selling them to major businesses around the world.

One leading company is Geek+, a Chinese robotics firm whose customers have included retailers such as Walmart, Tesco, and Decathlon. Its robots are designed to improve warehouse logistics by moving goods more quickly and reducing the distance that employees need to walk. Instead of searching through a large warehouse, workers can wait while robots bring the correct shelves to them.

Warehouse robots are already useful, but China’s ambitions go further. Several companies are testing humanoid robots with two arms and two legs.
