A passenger survived a frightening accident after part of an airplane window broke during a Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany. The incident happened on July 10, shortly after takeoff while the aircraft was climbing to its cruising altitude. According to passengers, the man was partially pulled toward the broken window before other travelers managed to pull him back inside. He suffered injuries but survived.

Investigators believe that a problem inside one of the aircraft’s engines may have caused the accident. Experts say a damaged engine fan blade may have broken apart, sending metal pieces toward the side of the airplane. One of those pieces is believed to have shattered the window. Aviation specialists describe this as an uncontained engine failure, a rare event in which engine parts escape the engine instead of remaining safely contained inside it.

In that case, engine debris also broke a window, but the aircraft was flying at a much higher altitude and one passenger died. Because the Ryanair aircraft was still climbing at only about 13,000 feet, investigators believe the lower altitude and the passenger’s seatbelt may have helped prevent a much more serious outcome.
